The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has confirmed the death of prominent trade unionist, Comrade Domingo Michael Adeleke, who passed away in Geneva, Switzerland, while attending the 114th Session of the International Labour Conference (ILC).
The NLC spokesperson, Benson Upah, confirmed the development to The ICIR, stating that Adeleke died on Tuesday after a brief illness.
In a statement, the congress expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing Adeleke’s death as a painful moment for the labour movement in Nigeria.
“It is with deep sorrow that the Nigeria Labour Congress and the entire trade union movement in Nigeria, especially the 2026 Workers’ Delegates to the International Labour Conference, announce the passing of Comrade Domingo Michael Adeleke, who died today in Geneva after a brief illness while attending the 114th Session of the International Labour Conference,” the statement read.
The NLC explained that Adeleke was part of Nigeria’s delegation to the annual conference organised by the International Labour Organization (ILO), which brings together governments, employers, and workers’ representatives from different parts of the world to deliberate on labour and employment-related issues.
Describing him as a dedicated advocate for workers’ rights, the congress noted that Adeleke remained committed to the struggle for decent work and the welfare of Nigerian workers until his final moments.
“Comrade Domingo was a committed trade unionist whose dedication to Nigerian workers and the struggle for decent work took him to the global stage right to the end. His loss is felt deeply by all who knew him and worked alongside him,” the NLC stated.
The labour body disclosed that its leadership had visited the hospital where Adeleke’s body is being kept and had commenced arrangements for the repatriation of his remains to Nigeria.
The NLC also extended its condolences to the deceased’s family, colleagues, and members of the labour movement, describing his passing as a significant loss to organised labour in the country.
Until his death, Adeleke served as the Chairman of the Lagos State Joint Negotiating Council (JNC) and was a member of the Nigeria Civil Service Union (NCSU), among other responsibilities within the labour movement.
His death has cast a sombre mood over Nigeria’s participation at the ongoing International Labour Conference in Geneva, where delegates are discussing key issues affecting workers and employment across the globe.
Meanwhile, tributes have continued to pour in from labour leaders and workers nationwide, with many remembering Adeleke for his contributions to labour relations, advocacy for workers’ welfare, and unwavering commitment to social justice.
The 114th Session of the International Labour Conference continues in Geneva, bringing together stakeholders from governments, employers’ organisations, and workers’ groups to address pressing global labour concerns and shape international labour standards.
