Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, has called on Nigerians to safeguard and strengthen the country’s democratic achievements in honour of those who fought for freedom, constitutional governance and the rule of law.
In a Democracy Day message issued on Friday in Jalingo to mark the June 12 national holiday, the governor described democracy as the most effective system of government despite its challenges. He said its principles of separation of powers, judicial independence and a free press remain essential pillars of a thriving democratic society.
Kefas noted that although Nigeria’s democratic journey has faced difficult political periods over the years, the nation has continued to overcome such challenges and emerge stronger.
The governor also praised President Bola Tinubu, describing him as a committed democrat who has shown courage and dedication to the country’s democratic development. According to him, Tinubu has respected the independence of the other arms of government and contributed significantly to the consolidation of democracy in Nigeria.
He urged citizens to work together to promote democratic values, strengthen the rule of law and participate actively in governance. Stressing the importance of the electoral process, Kefas reminded Nigerians that the right to vote must be protected and exercised responsibly.
The governor further commended the media for its role in advancing democracy, particularly in resisting oppression and advocating justice. He maintained that no democracy can flourish without a free press and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting freedom of expression as guaranteed by the Constitution.
Expressing confidence in the future of Nigeria’s democracy, Kefas said continued adherence to constitutional principles by all institutions of government would further deepen democratic governance. He also paid tribute to the armed forces for their contributions to sustaining the nation’s democratic experience.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic history, the governor honoured statesmen and patriots who opposed authoritarian rule and laid the foundations for constitutionalism and democratic governance.
He said their sacrifices should never be forgotten, adding that Nigerians must continue to preserve and build on the democratic gains achieved over the years.
