Osi Balogun of Ibadanland Dies After Brief Illness

By Monsurat Abisoye

The Osi Balogun of Ibadanland, Oba Olubunmi Isioye-Dada, has died after a brief illness.

A palace source, who requested anonymity, confirmed the monarch’s passing in a telephone conversation on Friday. According to the source, Oba Isioye-Dada died at his residence in Ibadan, while a delegation of Omo Oye had already visited the late chief’s home following news of his death.

Until his demise, Oba Isioye-Dada held the revered title of Osi Balogun of Ibadanland, one of the most prominent positions in the traditional chieftaincy hierarchy of the ancient city.

His death is expected to set in motion a series of promotions within the Balogun line of the Ibadan traditional system, affecting several chiefs and high chiefs.

Among those likely to benefit from the succession process is All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant, Senator Sharafadeen Ali. Subject to the approval of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, Senator Ali is expected to move from the position of Ekaarun Balogun to Ekerin Balogun of Ibadanland.

Similarly, Oba Akeem Mobolaji Adewoyin is anticipated to advance from Ekerin Balogun to the rank of Asipa Balogun as the traditional succession process progresses.
