England head coach Thomas Tuchel has said midfielder Jude Bellingham will have to earn his place in the Three Lions’ starting lineup ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting that competition within the squad is stronger than ever.
Tuchel, who took charge of England in January 2025, stated that no player is guaranteed a starting role despite Bellingham’s status as one of the country’s most influential talents.
Speaking ahead of England’s World Cup preparations, the German tactician acknowledged Bellingham’s importance to the team but emphasized that the squad now boasts significant depth across all positions.
“Yes, he has a fight on his hands,” Tuchel said. “He is one of the starters, he knows he is one of the starters, but we have 14 or 15 potential starters.”
Bellingham was a key figure for England during Euro 2024 but has experienced a less consistent role under Tuchel, starting only four matches while making three substitute appearances. Injuries and fitness concerns have also limited his involvement during parts of the campaign.
Meanwhile, Morgan Rogers has emerged as one of England’s most reliable performers under the new manager. The midfielder has featured in 12 of England’s 13 matches since Tuchel’s appointment and remains the only player to have appeared in all eight World Cup qualifying fixtures.
Despite Rogers’ rise, Tuchel maintained that places remain open as the team continues its build-up to the global tournament.
The England boss recently praised Bellingham’s return to form following injury setbacks, describing the Real Madrid star as being in a “sweet spot” physically and mentally. He also highlighted the midfielder’s energy, leadership qualities and decisive performance in England’s recent warm-up victory over New Zealand, where Bellingham briefly captained the side after coming on at half-time.
Tuchel’s remarks underscore the fierce competition within England’s midfield, with vice-captain Declan Rice also expected to play a pivotal role at the World Cup.
