Spanish giants Real Madrid have completed the signing of Spain international Marc Cucurella from Chelsea in a deal reportedly worth €55 million.
The La Liga side confirmed the transfer on Monday, announcing that the 27-year-old defender has signed a six-year contract that will keep him at the Santiago Bernabéu until June 2032.
In a statement released by the club, Real Madrid said an agreement had been reached with Chelsea for the transfer of the left-back, who becomes one of the club’s major additions ahead of the new season.
Cucurella arrives in Madrid after spending four seasons at Chelsea, having joined the Premier League club from Brighton and Hove Albion in 2022. The Spanish defender began his football career in Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy before establishing himself at Getafe and later Brighton.
The move sees Cucurella return to Spanish football and become the only Real Madrid representative in Spain’s squad currently competing at the FIFA World Cup.
His arrival comes during a period of rebuilding at the Bernabéu. Club president Florentino Pérez was recently re-elected and has initiated significant changes following two consecutive seasons without a major trophy. Real Madrid also appointed José Mourinho as head coach earlier this month.
The Spanish powerhouse is reportedly planning further reinforcements, with Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konaté linked with a free transfer upon the expiration of his contract, while Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva and Inter Milan wing-back Denzel Dumfries have also been mentioned as potential targets.
For Chelsea, Cucurella’s departure marks the end of a notable spell at Stamford Bridge. During his time with the Blues, he helped the club win the FIFA Club World Cup and the UEFA Conference League in 2025.
The defender leaves London with two years still remaining on his Chelsea contract after a challenging campaign that saw the club finish 10th in the Premier League. He was also among players who publicly questioned the decision to dismiss manager Enzo Maresca midway through the season.
