The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) has reaffirmed its commitment to introducing a National Digital Postcode System that will assign a unique digital address to every addressable building across the country.
Speaking at the unveiling of the Post Code Delineation Model Validation 2026 in Abuja, Postmaster General and Chief Executive Officer of NIPOST, Tola Odeyemi, said the initiative would create a machine-readable addressing framework to improve location identification nationwide.
According to Odeyemi, Nigeria will become one of the first African countries to implement a postcode system that extends to the individual building level, with each structure receiving a unique code.
She explained that the digital postcode system is expected to enhance postal and logistics services, strengthen emergency response operations, and support national planning through more accurate location data.
Odeyemi noted that Nigeria’s diverse geography requires different approaches to postcode allocation, stressing that factors such as topography, population distribution and building density vary significantly from one state to another.
She added that the postcode delineation process has been designed to align with existing administrative structures, ensuring that postcode boundaries do not overlap local government areas.
The NIPOST boss further explained that the ongoing validation exercise involves testing aerially mapped polygons against actual settlement patterns to ensure they accurately reflect realities on the ground across all states.
Describing the exercise as a critical phase of the broader digital addressing initiative, Odeyemi said the project aims to establish a comprehensive and standardised postcode framework for Nigeria.
Nigeria has long faced challenges associated with an inefficient addressing system, affecting postal services, logistics operations, emergency interventions and public planning. The National Digital Postcode System is expected to address these gaps through a technology-driven solution that assigns a distinct code to every addressable building in the country.
