The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced the distribution of sensitive election materials ahead of the June 20 governorship election in Ekiti State.
The distribution exercise began on Thursday at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) office in Ado-Ekiti under the supervision of the Ekiti State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mr. Bunmi Omoseyindemi.
The exercise, which started at about 8:00 a.m., was closely monitored by security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Immigration Service.
INEC officials assigned to the state’s 16 local government areas were seen collecting and signing for election materials designated for their respective councils before transporting them under heavy security escort.
Speaking with journalists during the exercise, Omoseyindemi expressed satisfaction with the process, describing it as smooth, transparent, and well-coordinated.
He reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to conducting a credible, free, fair, and peaceful election, noting that the early distribution of materials was designed to ensure timely delivery and adequate preparation across all polling units in the state.
The REC also urged eligible voters to come out in large numbers on election day to exercise their democratic rights and contribute to the success of the electoral process.
Similarly, the Commissioner of Police in charge of election security, Mr. Abayomi Shogunle, assured residents of adequate security before, during, and after the election.
According to him, comprehensive security arrangements have been put in place to protect voters, election officials, observers, and other stakeholders participating in the governorship poll.
Shogunle called on residents to conduct themselves peacefully and cooperate with security agencies to ensure a violence-free election.
The Ekiti governorship election is scheduled to hold on Saturday, June 20, with INEC and security agencies expressing confidence in their preparedness for the exercise.
