Violence Erupts At Kwara NANS JCC Convention After Chairman Emerges

Tension and violence disrupted the NANS Joint Campus Committee (JCC) Kwara Axis Convention after the declaration of a University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) aspirant, Comrade Yusuf Abdulquadri Eleburuike as the new NANS JCC Kwara Axis Chairman.

The convention held on Saturday, June 20, 2026 at the Nigerian Labour House in Ilorin began peacefully, and later turned chaotic following the announcement Eleburuike as the winner of the election by the Convention Chairman Comrade Olakanmi Abdullateef.

An eyewitnesses who spoke with 9japarrot media said students of Kwara State University (KWASU), upon hearing the outcome, allegedly jumped into the convention ground through the fence, triggering a violent reaction from Kwara State Polytechnic (Kwara Poly) students.

The situation quickly escalated as both groups engaged in a fierce clash where students were seen throwing stones, while pepper spray was also reportedly used during the confrontation.

In retaliation, Kwara Poly students fought back with stones, despite claims that they were not prepared for any form of violence.

In the heat of the unrest, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Student Affairs (SSA), Hon. Salami Wasiu Onidugbe was also attacked while leaving the convention ground. Some students accused him of supporting the KWASU faction, hurling insults and calling him names.

Meanwhile, efforts were made by the immediate chairman, Comrade Issa Arikewuyo Saoty and his outgoing executives to restore calm and mediate between the rival groups, but tensions remained high.

However, normalcy was eventually restored after police officers stormed the convention ground and intervened in the crisis.
