A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate and online publisher, Omoyele Sowore, at Kuje Correctional Centre pending the hearing of his application for a stay of execution of the order revoking his bail and issuing a bench warrant for his arrest.
In a ruling on Monday, Justice Mohammed Umar also dismissed Sowore’s application seeking the judge’s withdrawal from the case over alleged bias.
The court adjourned proceedings until 24 June to hear the application for a stay of execution filed by Sowore’s new counsel, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika (SAN).
Before the hearing began, Sowore arrived at the court alongside a group of supporters carrying placards.
Justice Umar had revoked Sowore’s bail and ordered his arrest on 16 June after he failed to appear in court without providing a satisfactory reason, instead sending a letter requesting an adjournment.
The Department of State Services (DSS) is prosecuting Sowore over allegations that he made defamatory statements against President Bola Tinubu by referring to him as “a criminal” in posts published on his X and Facebook accounts.
