The Islamic Medical Association of Nigeria (IMAN) on Thursday convened its 27th Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference at the University of Ilorin Auditorium, bringing together healthcare professionals, royal fathers, and key stakeholders to discuss the future of ethical medicine.
The national conference, themed “Compassion, Competence & Conscience: Integrating Islamic Values in Modern Medical Practice,” provided a platform to address systemic healthcare challenges and promote faith-based medical standards across Nigeria.
Delivering his opening address, the National President of IMAN, Prof. Ibrahim Adekunle Oreagba, emphasized that Nigeria’s healthcare sector stands at a critical juncture marked by infrastructure gaps, infectious disease burdens, and complex bioethical dilemmas.
He reaffirmed IMAN’s strategic commitment to advocating for “Ibaadah-friendly” healthcare environments, expanding research and capacity building, strengthening strategic partnerships, and ensuring financial sustainability across healthcare institutions.
In his keynote address, Senator (Dr.) Ibrahim Yahaya Oloriegbe underscored the importance of applying Islamic principles such as the sanctity of life, justice, modesty, trustworthiness, and service to humanity to contemporary clinical practice.
He dismissed the notion that medical practice should be detached from religious values, maintaining that spiritual conscience reinforces professional competence and drives sustainable development in the health sector.
Echoing the call for institutional growth, the Kwara State Amir of IMAN highlighted the need for intergenerational mentorship and internal unity.
He appealed to senior medical personnel to mentor younger practitioners, urging members to maintain professional brotherhood, resolve differences constructively, and prioritize collective community service above individual interests.
The leadership commended the Local Organizing Committee, royal fathers, guest speakers, and partners for their contributions toward hosting a successful national conference in Kwara State.
