Two female students of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), who were abducted on Sunday, September 6, 2026, have regained their freedom.
The students were reportedly abducted along the stretch between the university and Ihiagwa community during a security incident.
Confirming their release in a statement on Friday, FUTO Public Relations Officer, Mr Orakwe Ezugwu, said the students were currently receiving medical care and psychological support at the university’s Medical Centre.
According to him, the university management had confirmed the safe release of the students and was providing them with the necessary support.
Ezugwu added that the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. I.N.S. Dozie, had visited the students and interacted with them following their return.
FUTO management commended the police and other security agencies for their prompt intervention, while assuring students, staff, parents and members of the university community that additional security measures were being sustained in collaboration with relevant agencies.
The university urged members of the community to remain calm and vigilant, and to promptly report any suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities.
