Workers Declare Three-Day Warning Strike Over Economic Hardship, Minimum Wage

The Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC) has declared a three-day nationwide warning strike from October 2 to 4, 2026, citing worsening economic and mental hardship among workers and their dependants.

The council directed its national and state leadership to mobilise public servants for the industrial action, which is scheduled to commence at midnight on Friday, October 2, and end on Sunday, October 4.

The directive was contained in a circular dated October 1, 2026, and signed by the National Secretary of the JNPSNC, Olowoyo Gbenga.

The council said the decision followed the Federal Government’s alleged failure to respond to demands earlier submitted to President Bola Tinubu in a letter dated September 21, 2026.

According to the circular, the strike is intended to draw attention to the economic difficulties confronting workers and other vulnerable Nigerians.

The council directed public servants across the federal, state and local government services to participate in the warning strike, stressing that the hardship affecting workers and their dependants had become increasingly severe.

It said, “The economic and mental hardships are becoming unbearable and frustrating.”

Among the demands previously presented by the council are a reduction in the pump price of petrol to N500 per litre, an immediate wage award for workers and the establishment of a tripartite committee to negotiate a new national minimum wage ahead of 2027.

The demands come amid concerns over the rising cost of living and declining purchasing power, with workers facing increased expenses on food, transportation and other essential needs.

The council urged its national and state leaders to commence immediate mobilisation ahead of the industrial action.

“The time to act and mobilise workers for the three-day warning strike is now!!!” the circular stated.

The JNPSNC further directed its members to disseminate the strike notice widely and expressed confidence in the outcome of the action.

“Please, disseminate the information!!! Surely, there is victory for us!!!” the council added.

As contained in the October 1 circular, the warning strike is expected to run from midnight on October 2 through October 4, with public servants across the three tiers of government directed to participate.
