Aviation Fuel Supply Fluctuates as Airlines Receive 749.2m Litres
Nigeria Airlines received an estimated 749.2 million litres of aviation fuel between January and August 2026, according to data from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).
The figures showed significant fluctuations in domestic aviation turbine kerosene (Jet A1) supplies during the eight-month period. Daily receipts averaged about 3.1 million litres, dropping to 1.6 million litres in February before recovering to 3.1 million litres in August.
Domestic receipts stood at about six million litres per day in January, before falling sharply in February. Supply later increased to 2.1 million litres daily in March, three million litres in April and 4.3 million litres in May.
However, supplies declined again to 2.5 million litres per day in June and 1.9 million litres in July, before recovering in August.
The fluctuations come amid concerns over the rising cost and availability of aviation fuel, which have contributed to flight disruptions in some parts of the country.
Airline operators said aviation fuel now accounts for between 45 and 50 per cent of their total operating expenses, putting additional pressure on airfares and airline operations.
Air Peace founder, Allen Onyema, disclosed that a flight that previously required about N3 million worth of fuel now costs between N12 million and N13 million to fuel.
The NMDPRA figures represent domestic aviation fuel receipts and do not include a corresponding breakdown of imported aviation fuel
