Nigeria’s Daily Petrol Consumption Rises to 44.4 Million Litres as Imports Drop 30%

Nigeria’s daily petrol consumption increased by seven per cent to 44.4 million litres in September 2026, despite a significant decline in petrol imports during the period.

The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) disclosed this in its latest industry data released on X on Thursday.

According to the data, daily petrol consumption rose from 41.01 million litres to 44.4 million litres, representing a seven per cent increase.

However, petrol imports fell by 30 per cent to 10.2 million litres per day in September, reflecting a decline in the volume of imported fuel entering the country.

The report also showed that daily petrol receipts dropped by 23 per cent, from 50.5 million litres in August to 38.7 million litres in September.

Beyond petrol, the NMDPRA data indicated that daily consumption of diesel and aviation fuel increased to 14.5 million litres and 3.0 million litres, respectively.

Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) consumption also stood at 5.2 kilotonnes during the period under review.

The latest figures come amid fluctuations in petrol prices, which recorded a slight decline in September before rising again in October.

The increase in petrol consumption alongside falling imports and receipts highlights changes in Nigeria’s downstream petroleum market. However, the data did not establish the specific factors responsible for the changes in consumption and supply.
