One person has been confirmed dead after a two-storey building under construction collapsed in the Fadeyi area of Lagos State on Friday, with several others feared trapped beneath the debris.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu.
According to Oke-Osanyintolu, the agency received a distress call at about 12:10 a.m. on Friday, prompting the immediate activation of its Cobra Response Team from the Onipanu Base.
He said the emergency responders arrived at the scene at 12:12 a.m. and discovered that the two-storey structure, which was still under construction, had collapsed.
Following preliminary assessments indicating that construction workers might have been trapped beneath the rubble, the team commenced search and rescue operations.
Oke-Osanyintolu explained that emergency personnel were working to locate and evacuate possible victims while implementing safety measures to protect both the trapped individuals and the rescue teams.
He added that efforts were ongoing to determine whether more people remained trapped beneath the debris.
The cause of the collapse had not been established in the statement, while rescue operations continued at the scene.
