Soludo Says Southeast Support for Tinubu Could Secure Southwest Backing for Igbo Presidency

Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has said that the Southeast’s support for President Bola Tinubu’s second-term ambition could pave the way for the Southwest to support an Igbo presidency in the future.

Soludo stated this in a video while addressing his followers, stressing that the Nigerian presidency depends on political discussions, negotiations and agreements among different regions.

According to him, the Southwest could reciprocate the Southeast’s support when power returns to the southern part of the country after another turn in the North.

“Presidency is about discussion and agreement.

“Now that President Tinubu, from the South-West, is in power, if we in the South-East support him, then when power returns to the South after going to the North, the South-West will support an Igbo presidency,” the governor said.

The Southeast has long expressed its desire to produce Nigeria’s president, with political leaders and groups calling for greater inclusion of the region in the country’s highest political office.

In the 2023 presidential election, former Anambra State governor Peter Obi contested on the platform of the Labour Party but finished third behind Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party.

Obi, however, rejected the declared outcome, insisting that he won the election but was denied victory.

Soludo’s remarks highlight the role of political alliances and regional negotiations in shaping the prospects of an Igbo presidency in future elections.
