The World Health Organisation (WHO) Regional Director for Africa, Dr Mohamed Janabi, has said Nigeria currently has no Ebola cases following the medical evacuation of the index patient and her husband to Switzerland.
Janabi disclosed this in a statement on his official X handle on Monday, confirming that the evacuation was carried out earlier in the morning.
He said both individuals were Swiss citizens, adding that the patient was clinically stable after Nigerian medical teams successfully managed the acute phase of her illness and stabilised her condition.
According to the WHO official, Nigeria would continue monitoring 52 contacts, while Switzerland would take responsibility for the patient’s continued medical care and follow-up of her husband, identified as contact number 53.
Janabi commended the Federal Government, healthcare workers, clinicians, emergency responders and other partners involved in managing the Ebola case, describing the outcome as a remarkable achievement.
He said the successful management of the patient demonstrated Africa’s expertise, resilience and leadership in public health, particularly when countries collaborate to respond to health emergencies.
Despite the evacuation, the WHO regional director stressed that sustained vigilance remained necessary to prevent further transmission of the disease.
He urged health authorities to maintain contact monitoring and other response measures to ensure that the situation remained under control.
The development follows the Federal Government’s confirmation of the evacuation of Nigeria’s index patient and her husband to Switzerland as part of ongoing efforts to manage the Ebola situation.
The government had earlier identified 53 contacts linked to the case and announced support measures for those under monitoring.
Janabi reiterated the importance of continued surveillance and international cooperation in containing public health emergencies.
