2027: Peter Obi Meets EU Ambassadors, Seeks Support for Nigeria’s Democracy

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has met with ambassadors of European Union (EU) member countries in Abuja, where he appealed for international support for Nigeria’s democracy ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Obi disclosed this in a post on his X handle on Friday, saying the meeting took place on Thursday, a day after his engagement with the British High Commissioner.

He said discussions at the meeting centred on the rising cost of living, the welfare of Nigerians, the state of governance and preparations for the forthcoming general elections.

The former Anambra State governor said he urged the international community to stand with Nigerians in defending their democratic rights, particularly their freedom to elect leaders of their choice in a peaceful and fair environment.

Obi stressed that democracy could only thrive when citizens were allowed to freely choose their leaders and determine who governs them.

He said, “I reiterated my appeal to the international community to support the democratic right of Nigerians to freely and fairly choose their leaders in a peaceful environment.

“The international community should stand with the Nigerian people in defending this fundamental right.

“The very essence of democracy is respect for the right of citizens to freely make their choices and determine who governs them.”

Obi also expressed appreciation to the European Union Commission for the invitation and opportunity to engage with the ambassadors.
