Magixx Reveals How Hit Songs Determine Artistes’ Earnings in Nigeria

Nigerian Afrobeats singer Magixx has said that it is difficult for artistes in the country to make substantial money from music without releasing a hit song with international appeal.

Speaking on an episode of the Afrobeats Intelligence podcast, the singer explained that financial stability in the music industry depends on an artiste’s ability to consistently release hit songs after achieving their first major success.

Magixx disclosed that despite being signed to Mavin Records by its founder, Don Jazzy, it took him between two and three months before he started earning money from music.

He explained that during the period, he struggled to meet his financial obligations, including paying bills and supporting his family, despite being signed to a major record label.

The singer also noted that people often assumed he had no financial difficulties because of his record deal, making it difficult for him to seek financial assistance.

According to him, an artiste’s performance fee is largely determined by the number of hit songs they have, revealing that one hit could earn an artiste between N500,000 and N700,000 per show, while another could increase the fee to N1.5 million.

Magixx added that artistes must maintain an expensive lifestyle associated with stardom, even when they are yet to start making significant money from their careers.
