Senator Sadiq Umar Hails Kwara North Illustrious Son, Dr. Abdullahi, for Winning Global HIV Research Grant

Senator Sadiq Suleiman Umar (Kwara North) warmly congratulates Dr. Adam Hussein Abdullahi, a proud son and constituent of Edu Local Government Area (Lafiagi), on his award of the Collaborative Initiative for Paediatric HIV Education and Research (CIPHER) Grant by the International AIDS Society.

The Senator described Dr. Abdullahi’s achievement as a landmark moment for Kwara North and a powerful demonstration that local talent from our communities can compete and win on the global scientific stage. The CIPHER award, granted after a highly competitive selection process, is valued at up to USD 150,000 over two years and was awarded to only four researchers worldwide in this cycle; Dr. Abdullahi is one of two African recipients.

Senator Sadiq Umar said:
“On behalf of the people of Kwara North, I extend our heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Adam Hussein Abdullahi. This international recognition is not only a personal triumph for Dr. Abdullahi and his family, but a source of pride for Edu LGA, Lafiagi and the entire state. His success shows what dedication, scholarship, and a commitment to humanitarian service can achieve. We celebrate him today and we commit to supporting the young scientists and researchers emerging from our communities.”

Dr. Abdullahi’s awarded research will focus on critical gaps in paediatric and adolescent HIV including mapping drug resistance patterns among children and adolescents on dolutegravir (DTG)-based regimens in sub-Saharan Africa – work that has the potential to shape treatment strategies and improve outcomes for young people living with HIV. The Senator noted that Dr. Abdullahi’s prior research experience including fellowships and research roles at internationally respected institutions further underscores the calibre of this achievement.

Senator Umar added:
“We encourage relevant institutions, partners, and stakeholders in Kwara State and beyond to rally behind Dr. Abdullahi’s work. Investments that support homegrown research translate directly into better health outcomes for our children and communities. As a legislator and representative of Kwara North, I will continue to advocate for policies and programmes that nurture the talent of our youth and strengthen local research capacity.”

The Senator also extended special congratulations to Dr. Abdullahi’s family, including his father, Dr. Abdullahi Amanah of the Lafiagi Descendants’ Development Union and urged the people of Kwara North to join in celebrating a son whose work uplifts the reputation of Kwara State on the global stage.
