A coalition of concerned women in politics in Kwara State has declared its support for the former Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Hajia Sa’adatu Modibbo Kawu, ahead of the forthcoming All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election for the Ilorin East/Ilorin South Federal Constituency.
The Coordinator of the group, AbdulRazaq Barakat made this known, while speaking with journalists in Ilorin on Thursday. She described Hajia Modibbo Kawu as a competent, experienced, and grassroots-oriented politician whose leadership qualities and commitment to women inclusion make her the right choice for the constituency.
The group noted that the endorsement followed extensive consultations among women groups, party stakeholders, and community mobilisers across the constituency, stressing that her emergence would further strengthen women’s participation in politics and promote inclusive representation.
According to the group, Hajia Modibbo Kawu has consistently demonstrated capacity in public service through her contributions to education, community development, women empowerment, and grassroots engagement across Kwara State.
The coalition also commended the administration of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for creating opportunities for women in governance and leadership, describing him as one of the strongest advocates of women inclusion in Nigeria’s political space.
The group further urged the APC and other political parties to provide more opportunities for qualified female aspirants seeking elective positions, especially at a time when the proposed bill for special seats for women in legislative houses is yet to become law.
The women emphasised that supporting female candidates goes beyond gender considerations, noting that women in leadership often promote inclusive governance, social balance, community-focused representation, and greater attention to issues affecting families, youths, and vulnerable groups.
“We are calling on party faithful, stakeholders, and voters to support parties and candidates that genuinely create space for women. Political inclusion must go beyond speeches and translate into practical opportunities for women to participate and lead,” she added.
The group also encouraged women aspiring to political offices across the state not to be discouraged by societal barriers, while urging men and advocates of the HeForShe movement to stand firmly behind women who have shown the courage to contest elections.
The coalition maintained that the 2027 elections present another opportunity for Kwara State to strengthen gender inclusion and encourage more women to participate actively in governance and decision-making processes.
