Kwara 2027: Group Warns Against ‘Abuja Anointment’ Ahead of Monday’s APC Senatorial Primaries

A prominent political pressure group, the Concerned Kwara South Progressives has called on the party leadership to resist any attempts to impose an anointed candidate on the district ahead of the Monday APC Senatorial Primaries election.

In a statement released on Sunday and signed by its coordinator, Babatunde Owolabi the group argued that the political future of Kwara South should be decided strictly by the genuine votes of the party faithful across the seven local government areas, rather than by rumors of high-level endorsements from Abuja.

The group emphasized that true political legitimacy can only be earned through years of consistent grassroots engagement, community service, and accessible leadership—not through elite meetings in the federal capital.
The statement noted that attempting to manufacture a consensus or market a candidate under the guise of an “Abuja endorsement” risks undermining internal democracy and discouraging thousands of loyal party members whose participation is vital to the APC’s success.

“Kwara South has long been respected for its Omoluabi political culture—one built on decency, consultation, respect, and collective responsibility,” Owolabi stated.

“The district deserves a primary election that reflects those ideals. Aspirants seeking to represent the people in the Senate should be evaluated based on their grassroots connection, accessibility, and capacity to advance the interests of the district.” He added.

The group recalled the recent directives of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, who has consistently maintained that candidates within the progressive fold must emerge through transparent, democratic primary processes driven by party members at the local level.

According to the coalition, allowing delegates across Irepodun, Isin, Oke-Ero, Ekiti, Offa, Oyun, and Ifelodun local governments the complete freedom to vote according to their conscience is the only way to ensure the eventual flagbearer commands authentic acceptability ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The intervention comes amidst rising political alignments within the district, where major camps including supporters of Hon. Gbenga Makanjuola and former FCC Boss Hajia Muheebah Adenike Dankaka have similarly called for a completely open and transparent contest against the incumbent, Senator Oyelola Ashiru.

Warning party faithful not to fall for political propaganda, the group concluded that a free, fair, and credible exercise on Monday, May 18, remains the surest path to preserving party unity and securing a landslide victory for the APC.
