Abikan Hospital Marks 4th Anniversary With Free Medical Outreach for Aged, Youths in Ilorin

Abikan Hospital and Wellness Centre, Ilorin, on Saturday marked its fourth anniversary with a free medical outreach for elderly people, youths, and women in their host community.

The outreach, held at the hospital’s premises at No. 4, Adediran Adeyemo Street, Off Western Reservoir Road, Olorunsogo, Ilorin, Kwara State attracted residents who turned out to access free healthcare services as part of activities commemorating the anniversary.

Beneficiaries were offered medical checks and screenings for diabetes and Hepatitis B, alongside malaria treatments, free medications, and basic health assessments. The initiative provided an opportunity for members of the community, particularly the elderly, youths, and women, to access preventive healthcare services and receive health-related guidance.

Beyond clinical screenings, the anniversary programme also featured a health awareness talk on the impact of excessive social media use on mental health, delivered by Dr. Khirah Abikan.

Speaking during the session, Dr. Abikan noted that while social media provides opportunities for communication, learning, and entertainment, excessive use can trigger anxiety, stress, poor sleep patterns, low self-esteem, and emotional exhaustion.

She advised participants to adopt healthier digital habits by setting usage limits, taking regular device breaks, prioritizing face-to-face relationships, and seeking professional support when necessary, stressing that mental health is a vital component of overall well-being.

The event also provided an opportunity for the hospital to highlight major operational milestones recorded over its four years of operation, including a steady increase in patient patronage reflecting growing public confidence. The facility has expanded its services toward multi-specialist patient management, inviting visiting consultants across Surgery, Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Internal Medicine, Cardiology, and Radiology while establishing a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and expanding ward capacities to accommodate its growing patient population.

Speaking during an interview at the event, the organizer explained that the outreach was organized as part of the hospital’s anniversary activities, aimed at giving back to the community while promoting early detection and prevention of health conditions.

Commending the initiative, the Chairman of the Mandate Estate Residential Association, Mr. Muhammed Ibrahim Salau praised the hospital for bringing essential healthcare closer to residents, while a long-standing patient, Mrs. Kabirat Titilayo Sanusi expressed appreciation for the facility’s consistent quality of care over her four years of patronage.
