2027 general election, The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) set to publish provisional list of governorship and House of Assembly candidates, on Saturday, August 29, 2026.
The commission will conduct governorship election in 28 out of 36 states in the country, and House of Assembly in all 36 states.
The publication is in accordance with Section 29(3) of the Electoral Act, 2026, that mandates INEC to publish list of nominated candidates “within 21 days of the receipt of the personal particulars of the candidate… in the constituency where the candidate intends to contest the election.”
The commission had opened its portal on July 18, for registered political parties to upload the names and particulars of their governorship and House of Assembly candidates.
The portal supposed to close by 6pm on August 8 but was extended to August 11 based on appeal by the political parties, to enable them compete the process.
The exercise is part of INEC’s preparations for the 2027 general elections and will enable members of the public to inspect the candidates’ particulars and raise objections where necessary.
Section 29(5) of the Act provides that any person who believes that any information submitted by a candidate is false may file a suit at the Federal High Court seeking a declaration that the information contained in the affidavit or other documents is false.
INEC has repeatedly urged political parties and candidates to comply with the electoral timetable and relevant provisions of the law as preparations for the elections intensify.
The publication is expected to provide greater transparency in the nomination process and give eligible Nigerians an opportunity to scrutinise the credentials and other particulars of candidates ahead of the elections.
INEC has fixed February 6, 2027 for governorship and House of Assembly elections.
