Nollywood actor Timini Egbuson has admitted that his perception of YouTube movies has changed, joking that he might have struggled financially if he had continued to dismiss productions made for the video-sharing platform.
The actor made the revelation in a post on X, where he reflected on his former attitude towards YouTube films.
“Can’t believe I was looking down on YouTube movies at some point. Hunger go don kpai me by now,” he wrote.
His statement has sparked discussions about the growing recognition of YouTube movies in Nigeria’s entertainment industry, as more actors and filmmakers turn to the platform to earn income and connect with wider audiences.
Egbuson, who has appeared in YouTube movie productions, has gradually expanded his career beyond traditional cinema releases and major streaming platforms by embracing the opportunities available on YouTube.
Previously, many industry professionals viewed cinema releases and films distributed through prominent streaming services as more prestigious and potentially lucrative than productions released directly on YouTube.
However, the rising popularity of digital content is changing this mindset, with YouTube emerging as an alternative distribution channel that allows filmmakers to reach audiences and generate revenue.
This trend has also gained traction as changes in the operations of international streaming platforms have affected opportunities for Nigerian filmmakers, prompting some to explore other avenues for distributing their work.
Egbuson’s remarks reflect the changing dynamics of the entertainment industry, where financial realities and evolving audience preferences are encouraging actors and filmmakers to embrace opportunities they may once have overlooked.
