Kwara State has been recognized as one of Nigeria’s leading subnational entities in climate governance, ranking 5th nationally and securing the top spot in the North Central region in a recent performance index by data agency Statisense.
According to the Statisense October 2026 report, Kwara scored 84.85% in climate governance assessment, placing it among a shortlist of just 12 states recognized for exemplary environmental policies and climate frameworks. Katsina State topped the national ranking with 96.97%.
The high rating reflects sustained environmental reforms and resilience-building programs under Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq since assuming office in 2019.
Environmental interventions in Kwara have centered on urban sanitation, continuous monitoring and desilting of primary drainages and canals to mitigate urban flooding, and the development of public green spaces and urban gardens.
The state government has also implemented wide-scale tree-planting campaigns and water infrastructure interventions to strengthen resilience against drought, soil erosion, and climate-induced environmental stress across urban and rural communities.
The latest ranking reaffirms Kwara’s status as a subnational model for environmental sustainability, proactive disaster risk management, and structured climate action in Nigeria.
