Kwara Central Coalition Demands Zoning to North, Endorses Makama Lafiagi for Governor

A coalition of political groups in Kwara State has called for the governorship seat in 2027 to be zoned to Kwara North Senatorial District in the interest of equity, justice, and inclusive governance.

The coalition, operating under the banner of Kwara Central Political Associations, made the call during a press conference held on Wednesday, insisting that Kwara North deserves the opportunity to produce the next governor after years of political loyalty and support to successive administrations.

The groups, which identified themselves as loyal members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), said the demand was rooted in fairness and the need to promote balanced representation among the three senatorial districts.

According to the coalition, Kwara North has never produced a governor since Nigeria’s return to democratic rule in 1999, while Kwara South has occupied the office for eight years and Kwara Central would have held power for 20 years by 2027.

“For a state that prides itself on unity, peaceful coexistence, and shared progress, it is only fair and morally right that power rotates to Kwara North,” the coalition stated.

The groups argued that denying Kwara North the governorship again could deepen feelings of marginalisation and weaken political inclusion in the state.

The coalition also noted that Kwara North has consistently played a decisive role in delivering electoral victories for candidates from other zones, including support for Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq during the 2019 and 2023 elections despite the emergence of a prominent Kwara North candidate under the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2023.

The coalition further appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Governor AbdulRazaq, and APC leaders to support the zoning arrangement in the spirit of fairness and political stability ahead of the 2027 elections.

As part of the campaign for a power shift, the coalition endorsed Tajudeen AbdulKadir Audu, popularly known as Makama Lafiagi, describing him as a credible and impactful figure capable of leading the state.

The coalition said Makama’s track record in education, healthcare, youth empowerment, and community development distinguished him as a leader with proven capacity despite never holding public office.

According to the statement, Makama, through the Makama Initiative for Nation Development and Support (MINDS), has sponsored over 8,000 students for JAMB examinations since 2022 and supported numerous others through higher education in institutions across the country.

The coalition also highlighted his interventions in healthcare, vocational training, and grassroots empowerment, describing his achievements as verifiable and evidence-based.

“What makes Makama exceptional is that he has delivered results without ever holding political office. He has changed lives without public resources and led without the instruments of state power,” the coalition stated.

The groups commended President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and also praised Governor AbdulRazaq for promoting inclusivity and development across the state.

They concluded by insisting that the 2027 governorship should be ceded to Kwara North in the interest of justice and sustainable unity.

“The time for equity is now. The time for Kwara North is 2027,” the statement added.

The coalition was led by groups including Kwara Progressive Caucus, Kwara Elite Youth Forum, and Irewumi-Amana Political Association.
