Ahead of the 2027 general elections, hundreds of students and youth leaders from across the seven local government areas of Kwara South Senatorial District converged in Offa on Friday for a massive solidarity rally to back Hon. Chief Gbenga Joseph Obanla for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senatorial ticket.
The peaceful rally, organized under the aegis of the Kwara South Unified Students brought together student union delegates and youth mobilizers from key tertiary institutions and communities including Offa, Oro, Omu-Aran, Oke-Ode, Erin-Ile, and Oko.
The demonstrators, who marched through major streets carrying banners and placards with inscriptions such as “Students Want Obanla” and “A Retired Teacher Who Values Education,” stated that their endorsement was informed by Obanla’s extensive background in the educational sector.
Speaking during the rally, student representatives maintained that Obanla’s professional history as a classroom teacher before his foray into mainstream politics gives him firsthand insight into the structural deficiencies facing public education, student welfare, and youth unemployment within the district.
“Hon. Joseph Obanla is more than a politician; he is an educator, a mentor, and a leader who understands why quality education and youth empowerment matter,” the student coalition stated.
“Kwara South needs a legislator with vision, experience, and a genuine commitment to students at the National Assembly.” they added.
The massive student-led mobilization comes at a critical time when the leadership of the Kwara State PDP is fine-tuning its internal consensus mechanisms to select its standard-bearers for the 2027 legislative polls.
While the main opposition party is yet to make an official announcement regarding the outcome of its recently concluded senatorial consensus screenings, the student leaders insisted that the youth demographic forms the largest voting bloc in the district and their structural preferences must be respected by party elders.
