Amusan Breaks Rabat Meet Record, Secures First Diamond League Win of Season

Nigeria’s sprint hurdling star, Tobi Amusan, delivered a commanding performance at the Rabat Diamond League on Sunday, winning the women’s 100m hurdles and setting a new meeting record of 12.28 seconds.

The victory marked Amusan’s first Diamond League triumph of the season and saw her erase her previous Rabat meet record of 12.45 seconds, which she established last year.

The world record holder equalled her season’s best time of 12.28 seconds, set at the Xiamen Diamond League last week, continuing her steady return to top form ahead of major international competitions later in the year.

Amusan crossed the finish line comfortably ahead of Devynne Charlton, who finished second in 12.40 seconds, while Nadine Visser claimed third place with a time of 12.47 seconds.

According to PUNCH, The result represented another significant improvement for the Nigerian, who opened her Diamond League campaign with a third-place finish before placing second in Xiamen. Her victory in Rabat now signals a strong upward trajectory as she seeks to reclaim the Diamond League title she has won three times previously.

Amusan entered the 2026 season on the back of a fourth consecutive African title and has continued to build momentum with each outing.

However, the race for this year’s Diamond League crown remains highly competitive. Among her main challengers is American hurdler Masai Russell, who recently clocked an impressive 12.14 seconds, one of the fastest times recorded this season and a performance that came close to threatening Amusan’s world record.

The Nigerian made history at the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Eugene when she set a world record of 12.12 seconds in the semi-finals, breaking the previous mark of 12.20 seconds set by Kendra Harrison in 2016. She later ran an even faster 12.06 seconds in the final, though the time was not ratified due to excessive wind assistance.

Having endured challenges in recent seasons, including a provisional suspension by the Athletics Integrity Unit in 2023 over missed whereabouts filings before being cleared to compete, Amusan appears determined to re-establish herself at the summit of women’s sprint hurdling.

With her confidence growing and performances improving, the 29-year-old will now turn her attention to the remaining Diamond League meetings and the Commonwealth Games, where she hopes to add more titles to an already illustrious career.
