Former England international and Premier League appearance record holder James Milner has announced his retirement from professional football, bringing the curtain down on a remarkable career that spanned more than two decades.
The 40-year-old midfielder, who spent the last three seasons with Brighton & Hove Albion, confirmed his decision on Monday after becoming a free agent at the end of his contract.
Milner leaves the game as one of the most respected and durable players in English football history, having amassed over 600 Premier League appearances and recently setting a new record for the most appearances in the competition.
The veteran midfielder began his professional career at Leeds United before enjoying spells with Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Manchester City, Liverpool and Brighton. Renowned for his versatility, consistency and professionalism, he established himself as one of the Premier League’s most reliable performers.
During his time at Manchester City, Milner won two Premier League titles before joining Liverpool, where he enjoyed further success, including winning another league title and lifting the UEFA Champions League trophy in 2019.
On the international stage, Milner earned recognition as a dependable member of the England national team, representing the Three Lions at two FIFA World Cups and two UEFA European Championships.
Reflecting on his career in a farewell message shared on social media, Milner expressed gratitude for the experiences and relationships football had given him.
“I’ve been fortunate enough to experience some unforgettable moments, from fighting for survival to winning trophies, playing in Europe, and representing my country at two European Championships and two World Cups,” he said.
“But more than anything, it’s the people and friendships I’ve made throughout the game that I’ll cherish forever.”
