The APC Elders Caucus in Kwara State has warned that the ruling party risks losing the governorship election in 2027 if it proceeds with Speaker Salihu Yakubu Danladi as its candidate.
The warning was contained in a statement presented at a press conference held in Ilorin on Monday.
The elders in the statement read by their chairman, Sir (Dr.) Chief James Bamisaiye Ayenioye, JP, said changing political realities in the state require the party to field a candidate with broad acceptance among party members and the electorate.
According to the caucus, assumptions that the APC can win elections regardless of who emerges as candidate are no longer supported by realities on the ground.
The group argued that opposition parties have become stronger and more organised in recent years.
It added that voters’ expectations and political behaviour have changed significantly, making candidate selection more important than ever.
The elders said they were not convinced that Danladi possesses the level of popularity and statewide appeal needed to lead the party to victory.
The caucus urged the APC leadership to reassess the situation before the party commits itself to a path that could result in electoral defeat.
The group insisted that its intervention was intended to protect the future of the APC rather than undermine it.
