Abuja, Nigeria — The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has named former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, as the running mate to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for the 2027 presidential election.
The announcement was made in Abuja by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, following consultations with party leaders, coalition partners, and stakeholders across the country.
According to the party, Amaechi’s emergence was influenced by his performance during the ADC presidential primary and his extensive experience in public service, spanning both legislative and executive positions.
Abdullahi described the Atiku-Amaechi ticket as a strategic alliance designed to provide Nigerians with a credible alternative ahead of the 2027 general election.
He said the partnership brings together two experienced political figures with the capacity to address Nigeria’s economic, security, and governance challenges.
“The Atiku-Amaechi ticket represents the coming together of tested leaders with the experience, national outlook, and leadership qualities required to move Nigeria toward prosperity, security, and inclusive development,” he stated.
The party highlighted Amaechi’s political career, noting that he served as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Governor of Rivers State for two terms, and later Minister of Transportation.
ADC further argued that Amaechi’s political influence in the South-South region and across Southern Nigeria would strengthen the party’s national appeal and improve its electoral prospects.
The party maintained that the combination of Atiku and Amaechi reflects a broad national coalition capable of bridging regional and political divides while fostering national unity.
According to Abdullahi, the campaign will focus on key issues affecting Nigerians, including economic recovery, job creation, national security, and social cohesion.
“At a time when Nigerians are demanding competent leadership and practical solutions to national challenges, the ADC is presenting a team prepared to govern and deliver meaningful results,” he said.
The party called on its members, coalition partners, civil society groups, youth organisations, and women groups to unite behind the ticket as preparations for the 2027 election gather momentum.
Atiku, who served as Nigeria’s Vice President between 1999 and 2007, remains one of the country’s most prominent opposition figures and has contested the presidency multiple times.
Amaechi, widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s influential political leaders, has occupied several strategic positions in government and played key roles in national politics over the past two decades.
