Mama G Advises Parents on “Shielding Children From Struggles”

Veteran actress Patience Ozokwor has advised parents against shielding their children from all hardship, warning that doing so could undermine their ability to cope with life’s challenges.

Ozokwor, popularly known as Mama G, shared this advice during an interview on Femi Babs TV, where she discussed parenting, wealth and raising independent children.

The actress argued that parents who try to ensure their children never experience the difficulties they faced growing up may unintentionally deprive them of important life lessons.

According to her, there is a difference between allowing children to suffer and allowing them to struggle through manageable challenges.

She said, “The fastest way to ruin a child’s life is to say you don’t want them to suffer the way you did. I’m not saying allow them to suffer. What I’m saying is, allow them to struggle. Go through the process.”

Ozokwor also addressed wealthy parents who leave their children numerous properties without teaching them the value of hard work and the sacrifices involved in acquiring such wealth.

She cited a parent who owns several houses in different cities, noting that the children might grow up without understanding how difficult it was for their parents to acquire the properties.

When they don’t struggle, can you imagine you have like 20 houses? You have in Enugu, you have in Aba, you have in Lagos. Your children will just be struggling, ‘Which one belongs to me?’ They don’t know how you struggled to get those things,” she said

The actress urged parents to allow their children to work for what they want while ensuring they understand that comfort and privilege should not be taken for granted.

Ozokwor further advised parents to let their children experience some of life’s challenges so they can develop resilience and appreciate the opportunities available to them.

She added that children raised with too much comfort could eventually grow up believing an easy life is guaranteed.

“Let your children know the pains of life. Not all the pains, but the little they know will tell them that when they look back, they will see that people go through harder ones, and they will thank God for where they are,” she added.
