As the 2027 elections draw closer, political discussions are already beginning to take shape across Kwara South. Beyond party politics, there is a more important issue that voters should consider: who can truly understand and represent the interests of the district?
Kwara South is home to politically aware, intelligent and highly exposed people. The people understand politics, and they also know what they expect from someone representing them at the National Assembly.
One major concern today is security. Kidnapping and other criminal activities in some communities have continued to cause worry, particularly among farmers and people in rural areas. Whoever emerges as senator must be ready to speak firmly on these issues and push for stronger federal attention to the security of the district.
Another concern is access to federal jobs and opportunities. Kwara South has many qualified young people, but many still struggle to benefit from federal employment, empowerment programmes and other opportunities. A senator should be able to use the position to draw attention to these gaps and fight for fair opportunities for the people.
There is also the need for effective legislation. Being present in the Senate is not enough. People want to see their concerns reflected in bills, motions and policies that can have a real impact on their lives.
This is why I believe experience, relevance and knowledge of the political terrain matter. Kwara South needs someone who understands its communities and the issues confronting them. An outsider may have experience, but there is an advantage in having a politician who already understands the people and the realities on the ground.
This is where the candidacy of Hon. Prince Saheed Popoola, the PDP candidate, becomes interesting. His experience in grassroots politics and the legislature gives him some understanding of both the people and the responsibilities that come with public office.
For me, the 2027 election should not be about party slogans alone. Voters should consider capacity, experience, accessibility, relevance and understanding of the district.
Kwara South is exceptional in its political awareness and exposure. It deserves representation that understands that standard.
At the end of the day, the question voters should ask is simple: Who understands Kwara South, understands its problems and has the capacity to speak for its people where it matters most?
