Ebonyi Forum Condemns Killing of Woman, 18-Year-Old Boy in Anambra, Calls for Justice

The Ebonyi Unity Forum in Anambra State has condemned the reported killings of a 23-year-old woman and an 18-year-old boy in Aguata Local Government Area, calling on security agencies to investigate the incidents and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.

The group also appealed to residents of the affected communities to remain calm and refrain from retaliatory actions that could escalate tensions.

The incidents involved the alleged killing of Mmesoma Umeorini by her boyfriend following a reported breakup in Uga community, and the killing of an 18-year-old boy by his father in Ori-Eri community.

In a statement issued on Monday, the forum’s President-General, Chief Moses Ofoke, and Secretary, Aloke Stanley, expressed concern over the incidents and reports of alleged stigmatisation of some Ebonyi indigenes living in the area.

The forum distanced the Ebonyi community from the alleged actions, warning against using the conduct of individuals to judge or discriminate against an entire population.

It disclosed that its representatives had visited the State Criminal Investigation Department in Anambra to engage with relevant authorities and obtain information about the cases.

The forum subsequently held an emergency meeting attended by the Traditional Leader of Non-Indigenes Living in Anambra State, HRH Igwe Amos Nkwuda, and other officials to discuss the situation.

Ofoke stressed that no disagreement, relationship dispute, provocation or family misunderstanding could justify the unlawful taking of another person’s life.

“The killing of a girlfriend or one’s own child is an act that demands serious attention from the authorities and society at large. Human life is sacred, and disputes must be resolved through peaceful, lawful, and responsible means rather than violence,” he said.

The group extended its condolences to the bereaved families and urged the Anambra State Police Command, the State CID and other relevant security agencies to conduct comprehensive, impartial and transparent investigations into both incidents.

It called on the authorities to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths and prosecute anyone found responsible in accordance with the law.

The forum further urged traditional rulers, community leaders, youth organisations and other stakeholders to promote peaceful coexistence and strengthen relations between Ebonyi indigenes and their host communities.

It cautioned residents against spreading unverified information, making inflammatory statements or taking the law into their own hands.

The group reaffirmed the commitment of Ebonyi indigenes living in Anambra to mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and cordial relations with their host communities, stressing that the reported incidents should not be allowed to trigger further tension or collective blame.

It maintained that justice, accountability and the protection of human life must remain the priority as investigations continue.
