As political activities gradually gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, conversations across Kwara North Senatorial District are increasingly centered on the need for competent, experienced, and visionary leadership capable of delivering purposeful representation. Among the leading names drawing attention across the district is Comrade MM Abubakar Essanti also widely known as “Mai Gaskiya”, whose profile continues to stand out as many stakeholders assess the qualities required to move the region forward.
Kwara North, comprising Baruten, Edu, Moro, Kaiama and Patigi, remains a district blessed with enormous agricultural strength, commercial opportunities, and vibrant human capital. However, many citizens continue to seek stronger representation capable of attracting development, improving infrastructure, expanding economic opportunities, and giving the zone a stronger voice in national affairs.
During recent interactions with community assemblies and local stakeholder gatherings across parts of the district, several residents some of who requested anonymity described Comrade Essanti as one of the emerging figures many people are watching closely ahead of the next election cycle. A participant at a community forum in Moro Local Government, reportedly noted that the district needs “someone with broad exposure, business experience and the ability to connect with decision-makers at the national level.”
At a separate gathering in Edu Local Government Area Lafiagi to be precise, another grassroot youth politician, Abdullahi Kawu said many young people are becoming more interested in candidates with practical experience who can open doors for employment, investment and empowerment opportunities. The individual added that leadership should now be measured by results, networks and the ability to attract development.
In Kaiama, a community opinion leader who preferred not to be named said conversations at the grassroots are increasingly focused on candidates who exemplifies humility and understand both private enterprise and public responsibility. According to the source, MM Essanti’s background in business and political popularity especially in Patigi stood out among other aspirants. This has become part of ongoing discussions among residents.
As discussions continue, several respected figures are said to be interested in the senatorial race, each bringing different experiences and backgrounds. Among those often mentioned are Dr. Kolo Baba Jiya, a retired customs officer now active in the hospitality business; Dr. Mahmud Mohammed, who retired as a Director from Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (HYPADEC); Alhaji Attairu Manko, a businessman; and Hon. Dauda Lata, who has served as a one-term member of the Kwara State House of Assembly, as well as Local Government Secretary and Local Government Chairman.
While these aspirants may each possess commendable experience, various opinions from the streets widely suggest that Comrade Essanti’s profile offers a broader combination of business success, administrative capacity, grassroots influence, and practical leadership experience. He is widely recognized as an accomplished oil and gas entrepreneur with decades of experience, particularly within NNPC Limited and the downstream petroleum industry.
Beyond his professional background, Comrade Essanti is also regarded as a major oil marketer in Northern Nigeria and has reportedly served for nearly a decade as Chairman of Oil Marketers in Niger State. His sustained leadership in a highly competitive and policy-sensitive sector is viewed by many as a testament to his managerial competence, resilience, negotiation skills, and ability to build productive networks across the country.
The oil and gas industry remains one of Nigeria’s most strategic sectors, requiring constant engagement with institutions, regulators, investors, and policymakers. Supporters believe that such experience would be highly valuable in legislative service, particularly in negotiating developmental opportunities, facilitating federal projects, and attracting investments that can positively impact Kwara North.
Across the district, many citizens are increasingly interested in leaders who can combine private sector success with a genuine commitment to public service. Political observers say Essanti’s national reach, industry experience, and grassroots connection could offer Kwara North stronger and more effective representation at the National Assembly of Nigeria.
As 2027 approaches, the political conversation within Kwara North will continue to evolve. Yet one issue remains constant: the people desire leadership that can deliver practical progress, create opportunities, and elevate the district to greater prominence. For a growing number of supporters, Comrade MM Abubakar Essanti represents that vision and possibility.
