Headies Founder, Ayo Animashaun, Criticises Nigerian Artists For Ignoring Local Awards

The founder of The Headies Awards, Ayo Animashaun, has criticised Nigerian artistes for submitting their works to international award platforms while neglecting local award schemes.

Animashaun expressed disappointment that some Nigerian musicians submit entries to foreign award organisations that show little interest in them and proudly announce their submissions publicly, yet fail to submit their works for consideration at home.

He also noted that some of these artistes later complain about being overlooked for local awards, including The Headies, despite not submitting entries in the first place.

In a post on his Instagram Story, Animashaun wrote, “Tom, Dick and Harry will submit entries to foreign award bodies that don’t even care about them and proudly post about it. But these same people won’t submit their entries to the Headies, yet they’ll complain about not being nominated. Funny..”

DAILY POST reports that several Nigerian artistes, including Davido, Ayra Starr, Tems, Asake, Burna Boy, Rema and Victony, have submitted multiple entries for consideration ahead of the 2027 Grammy Awards.

Meanwhile, the organisers of The Headies Awards have announced the postponement of the 18th edition of the ceremony to April 10 and 11, 2027, in Toronto, Canada.

The event was initially scheduled to take place on October 23, 2026.

According to the organisers, the postponement will provide an opportunity to expand activities across Nigeria and Canada. The planned programmes will include workshops, seminars, industry engagements, as well as a global trade and investment summit.
