President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the departure of Professor Mahmood Yakubu as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) following the expiration of his second term in office.
Professor Yakubu, who was first appointed as the 14th chairman in November 2015 for an initial five-year term and subsequently renewed in 2020, formally concluded his tenure due to the passage of time.
In a statement from the State House and made available to 9japarrot media, President Tinubu expressed gratitude to Professor Yakubu for his dedicated services to the nation and his efforts to sustain Nigeria’s democracy.
Tinubu particularly commended the former Chairman’s role in organising free and fair elections throughout his two terms.
In recognition of his years of s
ervice, President Tinubu has bestowed upon Professor Yakubu the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).
The President also directed that Professor Yakubu immediately hand over the affairs of the commission to the most senior national commissioner, May Agbamuche-Mbu. Ms. Agbamuche-Mbu is set to direct INEC’s operations until the official completion of the process to appoint a substantive successor.
Professor Yakubu, in a letter dated October 3, 2025, reportedly thanked the President for the opportunity to have served the nation as INEC Chairman since 2015.
