The Federal Government has released about N2.68tn for road construction, rehabilitation and maintenance projects across Nigeria between 2023 and April 2026, despite allocating N54.93tn to the sector during the period, according to data from the Open Treasury Portal.
The figures reveal a significant gap between approved budgets and actual releases, reflecting ongoing funding challenges affecting infrastructure delivery.
In 2023, N631.51bn was released from a budget of N2.53tn. Releases increased to N784.60bn in 2024 from an allocation of N9.39tn, while N670.68bn was disbursed in 2025 out of N7.22tn budgeted. As of April 2026, only N597.08bn had been released from a record allocation of N35.79tn, representing just 1.67 per cent of the approved budget.
Road construction consistently received the largest share of allocations, while maintenance projects recorded the highest implementation rates.
The development comes amid the Federal Government’s renewed focus on infrastructure under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. Key projects currently underway include the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Road and Sokoto-Badagry Super Highway.
Minister of Works, David Umahi, recently disclosed that the ministry inherited over 2,000 ongoing projects in 2023 and owes contractors about N2.2tn for certified works executed between 2024 and 2025.
While road sector allocations have risen sharply, experts say improved and timely funding releases will be critical to ensuring the successful completion of major infrastructure projects across the country.
