The Nigerian Senate has scheduled Wednesday for the passage of the state police bill after cutting short its recess to consider the proposed constitutional amendment aimed at decentralising the country’s policing system in response to growing security challenges.
President Bola Tinubu forwarded the executive version of the bill to the Senate on Tuesday through a letter dated 15 June 2026. The proposal seeks to establish a dual policing structure, allowing federal and state police forces to operate alongside one another.
During Tuesday’s plenary, Senate President Godswill Akpabio described the bill as a significant step towards restructuring Nigeria’s security architecture. The legislation was immediately referred to the Senate Ad Hoc Committee on Constitution Review, chaired by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, which is expected to submit its report ahead of debate and voting.
Akpabio urged all senators to attend the session, stressing the importance of broad support for the bill’s passage. He also noted that the proceedings would be broadcast live, allowing constituents to follow their representatives’ participation.
