The Jigawa State Police Command has confirmed the death of a police corporal who was shot during an ambush by suspected armed robbers in Hadejia Local Government Area of the state.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Lawan Shiisu Adam, confirmed the incident on Friday, saying it occurred on Wednesday when police operatives responded to a distress call from residents about an armed robbery operation in the area.
According to the spokesperson, the officers were ambushed by the robbers while responding to the emergency. One of the officers, a police corporal, was shot and later died from his injuries.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police expressed condolences to the family and colleagues of the deceased officer, describing his death as a painful reminder of the risks faced by security personnel in the line of duty.
The Commissioner commended the late corporal for his dedication and sacrifice, assuring his family that his service would not be forgotten. He also extended the condolences of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, and the entire Nigeria Police Force.
The CP visited the scene of the incident in Hadejia town to assess the situation and receive briefings from officers involved in the response. He also reviewed the security situation in the area.
He directed the Divisional Police Officer of Hadejia ‘A’ Division and the command’s investigation units to intensify efforts to identify and arrest those responsible for the attack.
The Commissioner further ordered improved intelligence gathering, stronger engagement with residents and increased patrols in Hadejia and other identified security flashpoints across the state.
He assured residents that the command would continue to protect lives and property, prevent and detect crime, maintain public order and ensure that criminals have no safe haven in Jigawa State.
