A 53-year-old woman, Nelly Monday, has been sentenced to one month in prison for allegedly dumping refuse into a drainage channel in Lagos State.
Monday was arrested in the Meiran area of the state on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, after she was allegedly caught disposing of waste in a drainage channel during rainfall.
The Lagos Waste Management Authority, LAWMA, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, stating that the woman was subsequently arraigned before the Magistrate Court sitting in Bolade, Oshodi.
According to the agency, Monday pleaded guilty to the offence and was subsequently convicted and sentenced to one month imprisonment.
The statement said Monday was arrested in Meiran while allegedly dumping refuse in the drainage during rainfall. It added that she pleaded guilty when arraigned before the court and was sentenced to one month in prison.
LAWMA warned residents against indiscriminate waste disposal, particularly the habit of dumping refuse in drainage channels and other unauthorised locations.
The authority described the practice as an environmental offence punishable under the law, adding that it would continue its enforcement activities across the state.
LAWMA said it would work with relevant enforcement agencies to identify and sanction environmental offenders, while urging residents to dispose of their waste responsibly through approved channels.
The conviction comes amid renewed efforts by the Lagos State Government and environmental agencies to curb indiscriminate waste disposal, particularly practices that block drainage channels and worsen the risk of flooding.
The authority again advised residents to adhere to approved waste disposal procedures and avoid dumping refuse in drains and other unauthorized areas.
