The Jigawa State Government has announced that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved additional relief materials and empowerment equipment for victims of the 2025 flooding in the state.
The State Commissioner for Special Duties, Hon. Auwal D. Sankara, disclosed this while speaking to journalists during the flag-off of the distribution exercise in Dutse.
He said the intervention, facilitated through the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, was aimed at reducing the hardship faced by affected households and helping them rebuild their livelihoods.
According to him, about 700 households affected by the disaster are benefiting from the Federal Government’s special intervention programme.
Sankara explained that the relief materials include 500 bags of 25kg rice, 250 cartons of spaghetti, 500 foam mattresses, 250 cartons of vegetable oil, 250 nylon mats and 250 blankets.
He added that the empowerment equipment comprises 54 pumping machines, 48 grinding machines, 40 sewing machines and 10 cargo tricycles.
The commissioner said the intervention was part of the Federal Government’s Special Intervention on Post-2025 Flood Disaster Relief Assistance to States, designed to reduce the impact of flooding on affected communities.
He commended President Tinubu for the gesture, describing it as a demonstration of his administration’s commitment to the welfare of vulnerable Nigerians.
Sankara recalled that the Jigawa State Government, through the State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, had earlier provided emergency assistance to hundreds of flood victims shortly after the disaster.
He said the state government distributed over 11,000 bags of rice, beans and maize, alongside cash assistance and other essential food items.
He added that improved seeds and other agricultural inputs were also provided to affected farmers to enable them to resume farming activities and strengthen food security.
According to him, the additional Federal Government intervention would complement the state’s earlier efforts to support victims and restore their sources of livelihood.
He further disclosed that officials of NEMA, SEMA, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, the Nigerian Red Cross and security agencies participated in the distribution exercise.
The security agencies included the Department of State Services, DSS, Nigeria Police Force and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC.
